This has been a point of debate in the past, and my stance has always been that Tharsis is not just any volcano. It's a magic volcano created by an assault of the goddess Nyx on Wyrd's creation (the Mythworld), in which the Trow were forged, which is exactly in the center of the known Mythworld, which if destroyed would subsequently destroy the entire world, and which erupts like clockwork every thousand years to hail the arrival of the Leveller. How many volcanoes do you know that do that?
I wouldn't be surprised if it kept on grumbling and erupting and generating heat around it for a year or so, though I doubt it actually kept spewing lava in a continuous stream or anything.
