Perfect in military strategy and defense is totally different than have someone bring the battle standard of one of your most hated enemies out and mock you with it.
Again, Balor would not make the mistake to leave Alric by himself.

The end-game screen is speculation on Bungie's part. It's also motivation to win. If you lose you see your target killed so when you restart the level you realize if you don't win Alric dies. The story is linear, however you argue its not is ridiculous. There is only one way through the game to fulfill the story. And that is to win.
Whatever is said above really doesn't matter. The true question is:
If the Deceiver and Balor were both around Alric, and they had their armies with them, explain the lack of defense and Dark soldiers around Alric? It's not explainable because its ridiculous to do such a thing.
Plus, let's remember balloons aren't space ships, you can still see the balloon way up in the air. The pre-game cutscene shows ghols watching and spying on you. Are you telling me that no Dark soldier reported back to Balor or the D and said "Um, we may have a problem, want to come down here and blast them with your lightning?". It all seems extreemely odd.
