I've gotten to the point where I think most of the debate is irrelevant. All I want to point out is this: if the D's intention has been to ensure the success of the Cath Bruig, rather than disguise himself in front of Alric, he would have simply told him, straight off, "I am an avatara who has been bound to serve Balor, but, if you kill him, I can help you." For various reasons (including the fact that Alric thought it was Balor), this isn't what happened. This by itself weights heavily against your theory.
This leaves you with the one piece of "evidence" that you've had from the beginning--the unlikely rescue. For some reason, you are intent on labeling "The Last Battle" as "a special case." Look, a perfectly logical Balor would have seen something was fishy in Alric's arrival with nothing but a battle standard and a handful of men.
Why is it that the only way to beat Balor is to play on his emotions? Isn't it possible to outsmart him? That's just what the ballooning is...an unconventional military tactic, yet you write off the idea that Balor could have forseen this. Remember, it's even possible that he doesn't know of the existence of these balloons..you disagree, saying he's been around for fifteen years, but there's no evidence that he's done enough fighting with the dwarves to have seen one.
You also bring up one point--the enemies aren't programmed to go after Alric. It's a good point, but it hardly matters. If all your guys die, you get a post-game screen showing a dead Alric. This wasn't natural causes--he sure does seem to know what he's doing and how to escape in "Out of the Barrier," so it's not like he died of thirst while wandering around aimlessly. He's dead because the Dark killed him. Most likely, the programmers decided to have the Dark target only the Champions to make it a little easier on the game-player.
