: First, let's remember that it's never implied Balor gives
: Alric the info--Alric gets it himself, while his mind
: is being probed. Balor probably wasn't aware that
: Alric found this out. Second, the info was right in
: the sense that a) There's reason to believe both
: Soulblighter and The Deceiver were weakened
What are you talking about? It is clearly stated that the Watcher brought the Deceiver to a near-death state. See GURPS.
And Soulblighter was not weakened. How many times have I've said that he was *not* an archmage or any kind of sorcerer. He was skilled in martial arts. He learned everything after Balor's defeat.
b) The
: armies of the Dark did fall,
Yes true, but under what circumstance is not known.
c) The Fallen Lords had
: been under the control of Balor, and then suddenly
: weren't, and, besides
Right, as Dan has said, this strenghtens the argument. The Deceiver wanted nothing to do with the Dark's campaign and saw Alric as his way out. Whether he impersonated Balor or not, he is the one who would have the motive to reveal plots to Alric.
d) If Alric got any false info,
: it was probably because of the circumstances under
: which he obtained it (i.e., severe duress).
Meaning what? His interrogation was never touched upon in detail. The journal just mentioned he was interrogated. I have no idea where you are getting the idea that he was exhausted from being interrogated by Balor. Alric was held up in a containment field, suspended in the air for who knows how long. That can wear down on a person.
: You're right that the Deceiver clearly was unhappy with
: being controlled by Balor. The D may have subverted
: Balor in many ways. However, this one idea that The D
: was the interrogator and fed Alric false info is
: unlikely given no evidence, and a clear lack of
: motive: If the D was acting out of loyalty to the
: Light, he simply would have told Alric his plans; if
: the D was acting to ultimately control the Dark (which
: is much more plausible)
No. Again, the Deceiver shows no interest in leading the Dark. Never have I read of this desire. You again are assuming all Fallen Lords have this desire, but he clearly has his passions elsewhere.
, again, it's curious that the
: D would act behind Alric's back--he should've
: pretended to be Alric's ally because the D knew that
: if Balor fell, it would mean his downfall too if he
: remained allied with the Dark (and he did remain
: allied with the Dark, and he did fall...into the ice.
What? For the hundreth time :
"The Deceiver nearly died in fleeing that fight (his battle with the Watcher) -- perhaps did die..." -GURPS
"Subsequent events proved each Fallen Lord very much wielded his own power on his own behalf, and that Balor's "lieutenants" really made up a Dark circle remarkably similar to The Nine's own as led by Alric." - GURPS
While yes, the Fallen Lords were bonded to Balor, they did not gain their power from him. They contained their own. The Deceiver fell into the ice when a band of men from the Legion attack him after he was so weak (from the Watcher) he couldn't flee or fight back. That was in December. Balor fell in July of next year. How can you relate the two events which are separated by eight months?
: He didn't have any way of knowing ahead of time he'd
: miraculously survive and be rescued sixty years
: later).
He had no idea that the Watcher would attack him by surprise in Seven Gates either. For all he knew, he was going to survive the war.
: So, the conclusion we can draw is this: there's something
: fishy going on in the general Myth world, just not in
: this specific case. The one reason we have to believe
: something is up--the relative ease with which the Five
: Champions rescue Alric--can be explained away by the
: same phenomenon that allowed Alric to defeat Balor,
: with relative ease, at The Last Battle.
How can the relative ease of the five heroes rescuing Alric be explained by Balor's defeat? Again, you aren't making any sense. Balor was defeated by Alric playing on his past character, using the 'krid standard. No such ploy was used in the rescue. The heroes simply swooped in and saved Alric rather easily. The ease leads to some questions.
