In Response To: Re: READ THIS, NOT BELOW (I hit "POST" b (Chris t' Crappy)
: I hate to keep this going, even for one more post,
: because it seems as if this argument has been
: exhausted for the time being, but I think it can be
: determined that something was a little strange, from
: either side, Dark or Light. I mean, Balor is the one
: whose forces swept across the countryside, sacking and
: razing all that stood in their way. I doubt he'd let
: Alric slip away so easily, with his weapon and with
: "false" information that would do *him* in.
: Alric was apparently under the impression that once
: Balor was killed, the Fallen Lords would fall. Not the
: case, but somebody convinced him of this. Something
: had to have been up.
: Perhaps the Deceiver could not act against his master. He
: had to find ways around the bind between him and
: Balor. Also, another possibility of why the D could
: not attack Balor directy is he would probably get
: beaten pretty badly, and if he risked the chance of
: losing, then he'd surly attempt to flee after the lost
: fight...right in the armies of the other Lords which
: guarantees his temporary or permanent death.
First, let's remember that it's never implied Balor gives Alric the info--Alric gets it himself, while his mind is being probed. Balor probably wasn't aware that Alric found this out. Second, the info was right in the sense that a) There's reason to believe both Soulblighter and The Deceiver were weakened b) The armies of the Dark did fall, c) The Fallen Lords had been under the control of Balor, and then suddenly weren't, and, besides, d) If Alric got any false info, it was probably because of the circumstances under which he obtained it (i.e., severe duress).
You're right that the Deceiver clearly was unhappy with being controlled by Balor. The D may have subverted Balor in many ways. However, this one idea that The D was the interrogator and fed Alric false info is unlikely given no evidence, and a clear lack of motive: If the D was acting out of loyalty to the Light, he simply would have told Alric his plans; if the D was acting to ultimately control the Dark (which is much more plausible), again, it's curious that the D would act behind Alric's back--he should've pretended to be Alric's ally because the D knew that if Balor fell, it would mean his downfall too if he remained allied with the Dark (and he did remain allied with the Dark, and he did fall...into the ice. He didn't have any way of knowing ahead of time he'd miraculously survive and be rescued sixty years later).
So, the conclusion we can draw is this: there's something fishy going on in the general Myth world, just not in this specific case. The one reason we have to believe something is up--the relative ease with which the Five Champions rescue Alric--can be explained away by the same phenomenon that allowed Alric to defeat Balor, with relative ease, at The Last Battle.
