: You totally misinterpreted what I said here. She doesn't
: mention betrayal. She's basically calling him a goody
: two-shoes.
Oh, okay. So this has nothing to do with the stuff about him allying with the Cath Bruig for his own purposes? I gotcha.
: The Heron are following him, which I think would make it
: official.
True--as the last remaining citizens of the Cath Bruig, I guess they have the right to vote him in.
: She makes referenence to his long association with the
: Cath Bruig, he responds by saying that the path for
: retribution makes for strange bedfellows. I would
: think this would imply his relationship with the Cath
: Bruig was odd, but served his purposes. I will concede
: that all it necessarily means is that he's now allied
: with a former enemy.
Personally, I think she's talking about his current relationship with Alric, but I must share your concession. Or follow your concession. Or duplicate your concession. Or whatever the proper phrase is.
: Even if he was covertly evil (which I'm pretty sure he
: was), they probably still would have been enemies. If
: they were allied then, then that would also be
: strange. However, you've convinced me it's just as
: likely he was refering to her relationship with Balor.
Wasn't exactly what I was intending to convince you of, but hey, I'll take my victories where I can get them. :)
: Agreed. That's not what I meant at all. Whether he was
: really bad or not, it would still make for a strange
: alliance.
: Why would two former Fallen who have no other history
: (Ravanna most likely died before Damas's birth if he
: was Culwyen contemporary) make strange allies?
The bad blood between them which I was suggesting would have occurred after Balor revived Ravanna. They didn't become mortal enemies or anything; they just rubbed each other the wrong way. Does it say somewhere that Ravanna and Culwyeh were contemporaries?
: We have no evidence that Ravanna had some kind of
: weakness like Shiver did. She couldn't stand people to
: learn her secrets or something?
She wouldn't have wanted Soulblighter to realize her true identity, according to my theory. So she wanted to shut The Deceiver up fast before word got back to Damas.
: If she's tangled with Myrdred before, she knows how
: powerful he is. She also knows that she's not very
: powerful this time around. I think it would follow
: that she can't win.
First, I just suggested they'd feuded before. That doesn't mean outright war as with Myrdred and Bahl'al. Shiver/Ravanna may have spent her off-days trading insults and threats with Myrdred without actually testing his strength in personal combat. Also, The Deceiver's a lot less powerful too, when he doesn't have an enormous army of undead and mind-controlled soldiers. You don't think she could have taken him if he hadn't already converted Phelot?
: He never had a chance to do that. The other dark would
: have seen. What we're told is that he attacked Phelot
: and seriously injured him. I'm guessing he bound him
: while he was weak.
You're probably right.
: I've remarked on that too. Matt Soell doesn't answer my
: e-mail on the question.
Matt? You don't ask *Matt* questions when you want to know about something. He responds either with total silence or with some tangent about "Jump Through Your Fist." When you want Bungie info, you ask *Marty*, of course. I thought everyone knew that. ;)
: That's certainly possible, and he may need Alric alive so
: that he can kill Soulblighter.
I agree that he's pretty loyal, though. He could easily have teleported across the continent after killing Shiver, set up his own kingdom of mind-controlled Ghols or Mauls or humans, and ruled undisturbed for a few centuries; instead he apparently chose to live in the West and serve Alric. I think his loyalty is primarily to civilization itself and only secondarily to its practitioners. He'll serve anyone who, like Balor, promises political stability (albeit stability of a particularly horrible kind); but he has no love for those who seek only destruction and chaos, such as Shiver and Soulblighter.
