I've seen this before in this forum but I guess I missed the evidence. What makes people think the Deceiver wants to be a "master of the Dark?" My impression of him is that he has his own agenda--mostly based on revenge--and that Light and Dark are just convenient hats he puts on when they suit him. The faking of his death, as far as I can tell, is simply because he's done. He's gotten what he wanted--cancelling the Myrks, revenge on Shiver, for what we're not entirely sure--and he doesn't have any reason to stick around. If he appears to survive, he'll be expected to continue to assist Alric and that isn't in his plans. No real evidence, of course, but it seems to me to fit. Like the warlocks and the Trow, he's the kind of ally that you're glad to have but you don't dare count on.
