: My whole theory hinges on what he does when he sees the
: myrk standard--he still thinks he's Light, and seeing
: that thing overpowers his destiny-inspired moral
: confusion. If someone can disprove this, they knock my
: whole theory on its head--and I will gladly give away
: my title (Head King Shaman Theory Maker, which, like
: Napoleon, I gave to myself).

I can't disprove it (what Asylum theory is ever completel disproved?) but Balor's reaction at seeing the standard makes it sorta unlikely. If your theory was correct, the conversation between Balor and Alric should go something like--

Balor: "Hey Alric, why do you have that standard?"
Alric: "'Cause I'm an evil krid-lover! Ahahaha!"
Balor: "Oh yeah!? I always suspected you might be evil! Eat this!"

Destroys the standard, etc.

But it actually goes:

Balor: "Hey Alric, why do you have that standard?"
Alric: "To teach you humility. The krids were defeated and you'll be defeated too."
Balor: "Oh yeah? I'll blast the standard with a big-ass lightning bolt and then we'll see who's feeling humble!"

Point is, Balor's reactions thoughout this scene are consistent with a big arrogant bad guy, not a confused would-be hero.
