I agree with just about everything you've offered so far except this. What "actions before the Wall" are you refering to? If you mean his indignance with Shiver's actions, it might just be that he's so aching for revenge, he'll do anything to thwart Shiver and Soulblighter.
The faking of his death reflects a wish to reappear as master of the Dark...what loyalty to the Cath Bruig is there in this?
