It's an interesting idea, and may not be TOO far from the truth--obviously, Connacht/Balor's mind was twisted somehow to become the Leveler. We don't know the exact nature of what went on in his mind, so you might be partially right. Certainly, we can theorize that Balor thought that what he was doing was right, or justified, in some sick way. But stuff like going to Muirthemne expecting to be hailed a hero...or thinking Alric sounds like chum when he talks...I dunno. A couple probs--he's allied with the Trow, his former big-time enemies. Could he be tricked into thinking these big hulks were someone else? Same goes with the masses of undead...what does he think THEY are? Also, Balor's style, like that of all the Fallen Lords, is to annhilate, not conquer. Could Balor fool himself into thinking he wasn't just mercilessly obliterating everything in sight? Also, he doesn't seem confused about the nature of Alric when the two confront each other in "The Last Battle"--"Join me or die," he says to Alric. My take on everything is that the mantle of the Leveler turns the Hero into something of a nihilist, making him hate everything that moves. Simple as that.
