Not always. Connacht killed the Leveller. All we know is that he imprisoned the Myrkridia and the Trow, since the Watcher's imprisonment now appears to have been the Deceiver's doing. And I think he imprisoned them more out of convenience than mercy. It would be a lot easier to entomb the Trow in the ice than to kill them all, since they're so tough but notoriously vulnerable to cold. And the Tain allowed Connacht to get rid of the Myrkridia much more rapidly, and with less danger to his own forces, than any known lethal spell would have done. Don't forget that the Myrkridia starved to death inside the Tain anyway.
