: You still haven't answered my objection. If, as you
: theorize, the Deceiver captured Alric on his own
: initiative (which he did if Balor didn't know), why
: the heck couldn't he just let him go after feeding him
: the info; alternatively, why did he have to capture
: Alric in the first place? Couldn't he just meet him
: out there, tell Alric that he hated Balor too, and
: tell Alric how to defeat the Fallen Lords (kill
: Balor)? Why the elaborate set up?

Ugh...isn't it obvious? He can't just meet with Alric, he would then forfeit any relationship with the Dark and would have all the Fallen Lords on top of him. Plus, Balor is the most powerful being alive and he would not be pleased. So, the meeting is fixed and planned like a capture, and its done very well.

The Deceiver's name has a root word, deceive, which he strives to do. He doesn't tip his cards before the call.

: Obviously, in order to make the game, compromises had to
: be made. As in the case of the Great Devoid, it's
: silly to assume that just because you can win, it's
: what the Fallen Lords meant to happen. As for why you
: don't see Balor, why you can win, etc. The whole point
: of "The Five Champions" is that it was a
: risky and unconventional plan. Balor probably expected
: the rest of the Nine to send a huge army over the
: Cloudspine to rescue Alric. I'll bet that Balor
: probably went to the Cloudspine himself along with the
: vast majority of his army in order to preempt what he
: thought was an imminent attack. What he didn't forsee
: was that a few supermen would be dropped behind enemy
: lines, and that Alric would escape without having to
: cross back over the Cloudspine. It's the surprise
: factor that explains your success in rescuing Alric.

Would Sadam capture the President of the US and not guard him to the extent that five marines could be dropped behind enemy lines and rescue him? If Sadam thought that the US was planning a large military invasion, he would still guard the Prez extremely well.

If Balor was to capture Alric, he would make sure that at least a Shade was guarding him, if not the immediate transportation of Alric to Rhi'Anon where Balor would guard him personally, thousands of miles from any legion soldier.

I know if I captured my enemy's leader, I'd guard him myself along with a full army.
