It's very vague and the author is speculating :
"...doubtless the man met a terrible fate..." -- "...even as he secured Dark's victory, Moagim himself was captured..."
It is doubtless, but no fact. Though, if the hero did vanquish Moagim or something else along those lines his name probable would have been remembered.
Moagim was captured as he nearly secured the Dark victory? By whom and how? Wouldn't that gentlemen who lead the army or set the trap be considered a hero?
I'm not trying to argue your point, yes Moagim most likely wiped out the hero of the time, but its very shady as to what truly happened.
