The Dreaming God's a Lovecraftian conception. ("In his great house at R'lyeh, dead Cthulhu lies dreaming.") The prevalence in fantasy and sci-fi of powerful beings who dream reality can be traced back to Lovecraft and Dunsany, although of course they were influenced by earlier religious and mythological sources.
