Hey, that's a pretty cool idea? There are rocks lying around all over the place on most maps, so the Jmen could use them as ammo. Though, can a unit carry two types of thing, roots and rocks, at the same time? And how to distinguish which you want to use? There's only one special action key.
Or maybe just have the "attack" sequence show them digging something up first, then throwing it.
