You forget the destruction of the entire east of the cloudspine, the ressurection of the Trow the betrayal of the Myrimidons and possibly even the Drowned Kingdom. Not to mention the fall of the cath bruig empire. All these things took place during the first 500 years (and mazzarin probably died during one of these battles)
There are still people fighting in the West because they were last on the list, not because the dark hadn't been around long enough.
