The idea wasn't that just killing the Leveller would have broken the cycle, but that the Hero killing himself too might do the trick. That's why I always found the "old" version (500 years light and 500 dark, now entering a Light era) lacking: oh yay, we've gone along with fate. Woo-frickin-hoo. But if Alric had died, *that* could be going against fate, for who then would become the next Leveller?
