In Response To: Re: The Black Company (Lord Raven)

: As far as D&D books go, I'd say it's the most usable I've
: seen. As I've said, the magic system is completely new
: and (I think) very, very good. Allows for
: customisation of the base spells, mixing them to
: generate different effects, and inventing your own
: spell. It's worth a look simply for that.

"As far as the D&D books go..." Damning with faint praise if I ever heard it. Still, it sounds like you like it, and it is a pretty neat setting, at least as an influence.

: And, as I've said, the three levelled combat system is
: quite good as well. I know others who have converted
: the squad level and army level combat systems to other
: games quite easily - they allow you to run battles
: without the complications of handling each 'soldier'
: individually.

That's good. Particularly if one used that for a GURPS Myth game, where handling Thrall as individuals is absurd to the point of stupid, most of the time. (Even if it isn't cumbersome).

: Seriously, it's almost a game of its own, with only the
: basic skeleton of D20 remaining. I'd recommend it to
: any roleplay fan, regardless of whether or not like
: they D&D. It could easily be used to run a Myth game,
: actually.

Other than how Myth differs from the Black Company setting, but we knew that. Well, I'll look into it. d20 may still suck, but you make this sound worthwhile.

Cheers to the writers.

One question: How do you feel it handles individual combat?
Realistic in RPGs has a nasty tendancy to make characters -too- frail, which d20 rules may temper in this book.
If so, that's a good thing. Sure, people die disgustingly easily at times, but it seems to take a pretty stout blow to take a veteran member of the Legion, or the Black Company for that matter, out quickly. That's my impression, anyway.
