It is hardly contradictory. It caused enough downfall of the Nine (This is a contradiction in itself, since Alric survived.) by killing two of them in the mini-civil war. The journal writer had good enough knowledge about current events, it would seem. He was hardly common folk if he survived all but the killing of Balor himself.
"Vanishing in the mists of history" sounds rather mystifying, though.
