Good eye on the scepter! Maybe that's why he wasn't able to keep Shiver from killing him in the end; the powerful scepter had been exhausted by his battle with Soulblighter.

Can you add into your theory an explanation of why the Deceiver is said to have "disappeared" after the battle at Seven Gates, even though he had another battle with Alric's forces first?
