Canon Categories (again)

In Response To: Re: Tooting the Old Horn: (Document)

: "The Fallen Lords are dead and the Dark has fled the
: land."

: So, unless Bungie was thinking of publishing a new story
: set before the end of Myth II, they probably meant to
: imply that the returning heroes reported The Deceiver
: dead. More references to his death would be redundant
: and clutter up the journal entries.

Though it's important to note that nobody ever mentions anything at all about the other two Fallen. Nothing about their deaths, nothing about their exploits, even about their names. All we know of them comes from (A) The obvious implication of their existence, as there are six Fallen but we only ever hear of four of them, and (B) Pseudocanon (prerelease and postrelease) materials that say something about these, although they contradict each other and so aren't immensely useful.

I think it's important to reiterate here the old Canon Categories that I codified, originally just for Myth materials but they apply equally well to any fictional universe:

1: Canon

1A: "Release canon".
Info from materials officially released by the authors as canon.
(e.g. the Myth games and their manuals, Tales from TFL, etc)

2B: "Transrelease canon".
Info that appears both in prerelease and postrelease materials.
(e.g. anything appearing both on Eidos' old site and in GURPS Myth)

2: Pseudocanon

2A: "Postrelease canon".
Info from author-endorsed add-ons materials to original releases.
(e.g. GURPS Myth and Chimera)

2B: "Prerelease canon".
Info from officially unpublished materials created by the authors.
(e.g. Eidos' old Myth pages, the legendary pizza box, etc).

3: Noncanon

3A: "Legal canon".
Info from materials by legal right-holders who are not the original authors.
(e.g. Myth 3)

3B: "Fan canon"
Info from materials created and widely accepted by the fan community.
(e.g. Principia Mythica, TFV, our new story, etc).

Apply in order, i.e. games trump transrelease info which trumps anything just in GURPS which trumps anything just from Eidos' site which trumps anything just in M3 which trumps anything we just came up with.

Thankfully, the way Myth was written, a lot of stuff is NOT outright declared from an omniscient point of view, and the in-character 'authors' of some higher-ranked material can be contradicted by the 'authors' of lower-ranked materials without actually creating a true contradiction; e.g. Myth 3 doesn't outright say much of anything, it says that some statue says that such-and-such happened; as such, we can contradict what the statue says without contradicting Myth 3, which only says that the statue said that. And if (Wyrd please) Bungie ever took up the Myth franchise again and made something which contradicted us, since we're writing it an an in-character "he said this happened", and Bungie most likely won't write about our made-up narrator character, we won't even risk actually contradicting future canon materials. I kind of like that about Myth now that I think about it - it's a big contradictory mess of alternate versions of the same thing, muddled and crossed up in the re-telling, and nobody knows what "really" happened. Just like real myths. And just like real myths, you can pull a lot of interesting stories out of that mess and who cares if they really all work together. It's close enough.
