It's already done. Myth 3 features a civilized Myrkridia, with mages and even at least one building. Myth II's flavor texts imply that the Giants were tribal leaders. Even TFL has battle standards. There's nothing that says the Myrkridia are at all stupid, just that they are vicious. Imagine a wolf pack... they don't (usually) fight each other, there's a strict social structure, the pack hierarchy. They're still ravenous killers that go out on the prowl every night, but they work together in doing so. Now imagine if they were bipedal with opposable thumbs and intellect enough to use them... and you've got Myrkridia. Rigid and ruthless totalitarian pack-structured society, savage killers that stalk the night to hunt for food to feed their voracious apetites, and intelligence enough to be tool-users back at home, to build structures for shelter and so on. (I don't imagine they'd have a need to build weapons, but shelter is certainly useful for anyone).

And you're right, it's terrifying, which is how they kept the lands stricken with fear for a thousand years.

This raises an interesting point though: the Krids hunt for food. They wouldn't go in and destroy a whole village just for the hell of it, just kill a few people and devour them and then leave. Being intelligent they'd probably rotate their hunting grounds, and not feed off the same village every night; gotta keep enough prey around that they can breed and keep their numbers up. They're also described as cannibals: I imagine that doesn't just mean they eat people, but each other, and so they might go on hunts after their own weaker tribes too, when other food runs scarce.

The interesting point this raises is why would they have destroyed our narrator's village? Maybe they did something to piss off the Myrkridia, tried hunting them down or something? Or maybe they just got sick of being eaten, tried to defend themselves, failed, and so ran for Muirthemne instead? I've got this funny notion in the back of my head that maybe Connacht has something to do with this... maybe the narrator is from Connacht's village, and Connacht was the lunatic who decided to make a stand against the Krids, and when it looked like it would be a failure, most (or some chunk) of the village fled... but someone after they left, Connacht managed to save those who remained anyway?

Don't reveal this right off, start the story with them fleeing the carnage and assuming the village is destroyed behind them, and don't mention Connacht at all, just something like, "What madness it was to think we could stand against the Myrkridia, and now thanks to that maniac and his arrogance, all our friends and family are gone, fed to the devil-monsters... We were fortunate enough to escape the carnage with our lives. May they rest in peace." Only later when we return to investigate these rumors of someone standing against the Myrkridia successfully do we learn that that was Connacht's village, and that he won against that attack, and has been holding the Krids at bay ever since. Maybe our narrator, on this mission, assumes that we'll just be picking up refugees like his group were, but when they get there and find it's his village, and Connacht is still holding them off...!
