That's probably where they got the idea from yes, though there's obvious differences - such as a mahir dying from an arrow whereas the Black Company's shadows were tough. Also the shadows didn't appear in quasi-human form with red eyes.

My little theory is very unlikely to have any relevance at all. Its just something that crossed my mind and stuck there :)
