: My question is about the Legion. Is the Legion the name
: given to the organised forces of the Light, or does it
: refer to large fighting units as used by Ancient Rome.
: The reasons for my asking of this question is because
: there is evidence that suggests both of these uses.
: In "Shadow of the Mountain" in Myth TFL, the
: Legion's standard that you have to defend is very
: similar to a Roman Legion's standard, including the
: number 'X' meaning ten which tells us that there are
: at least ten legions. This is the first time in the
: myth series that a legion has been mentioned as a
: sperate unit. Also in Myth TFL, Warriors in different
: levels wear different colored tunics. This could
: symbolise which Legion that they belong to, on the
: other hand it could be the colors of the region of the
: world that they are based in.
My theory is that, during the Great War, the Legion was a single entity, composed of the most hardened veterans in the West, who acted as an elite force for the Avatara themselves- if there had been more than one Legion, the journal writer would probably have referred to his own as "The Ninth" or possibly with a Roman-style nickname, such as "The Volones" or "The Spaniards". The 'X' on the banner probably refers to the tenth Cohort or the tenth Company.
By the time of the war against Soulblighter, the Legion had become as much of a rural police force as a standing army, and, since they were mostly dealing with raiders and brigands early in Alric's reign, trying to control it from a central command would have been almost futile, hence, it was scaled down into several smaller units, which were, nevertheless, referred to as "Legions", hence the reference to the Seventh Legion.
