I don't agree with you in this point. I think that Legion had more food than soldiers. In 17th year of war light didn't have alot of soldiers and still seems that villagers worked in the land. So villagers "made" food, and Nine lost soldiers.
Ah, and it happened to all armies in all times, not only medieval armies.

Ok, quiet true, but there is one problem here. If dark win, light lose soldiers. And still i think villagers forged every day more and more equippment for light army. So soldiers needed limited number of equippment, because light army had few soldiers.

You asked us about have we ever seen light units(or legion soldier) retreat. So i gave you an example. So still they retreated without order to do it. And it seems that narrator serve in elite group( i don't mean legion-elite group, i mean this small group that make dangerous missions, like retrieve watcher's arm, etc..), that's why we see exceptionally the to retreat from battle field. Still they retreat without orders.
