Hmm. We know from Myth 3 (for those of you that believe Myth3!) that, back in the Wolf Age, the soldiers of Llancarfan were divided into Divisions, rather than Legions (as in "I'm from the Fourth Division. We'll take it from here.").
However, the narrator seems to imply that the Legion were an elite force of warriors of the Light, rather than the entire Light army. To quote Bagrada: "I guess the worst thing about having a reputation for being a bunch of hardasses is that the Legion always finds itself where the fighting will be ugliest." Also note that the narrator always refers to just "The Legion", implying that it functioned (or, at least, was capable of functioning), as a single, cohesive whole. A Roman Legionairre would have referred to his Legion by its number (as in the book title "The Eagle of the Ninth"), or by its nickname (Hispana, in the case of the Ninth). To continue the Roman analogy, during the Great War, the Legion were, if you like, Alric's Praetorians, with the other members of the Nine serving as his Tribunes- capable of independent action, but, ultimately, subordinates. For all we know, the "X" we see on the Legion standard meant the Tenth Company, rather than the Tenth Legion- in fact, we only hear terms like "The Seventh Legion" referred to during the War Against Soulblighter, suggesting that Alric upsized the Legion during the sixty years of peace, having seen how effectively they fought during the Great War.
