I could see Damas as being either of these things
A mercenary captain who has proved himself so well that he is an 'honorary' member of the muirthemne army. They've asked, they've BEGGED him to join the Herons but, he refuses.

They never say he's a shade, I (also) beleive that mazzarin died a long time ago. He put himself in a crypt (that hte watcher is just bearly starting to take notice of) and set himself up so that if somone pure of heart came he would be able to 'wake up' besides, shades arent all the same (out of game) i'd suppose.... Shades just look a LOT like Avatara, even though as far as we know they are all different looking. Shades just look like old dead rotting avatara. Would we have a problem if he was a normal avatara even though we may perceive him as looking different? I dont think so...
besides hes not a shade, no big giant shadow, he's just an old dead man who 'woke up'

But it clearly says that Watcher was imprisoned and defeated by Mydred until Balor freed him in TFL. The last 'evil' age was the Wolf age, and I can't see the Watcher running around in a 'good' age just waiting for the deceiver to be born to stop him. during an evil age (the latest one being the wolf age and then TFL's age) he would be a Fallen Lord, and during a 'good' age he would be hiding, not attracting attention to himself ot let myrdred go imprison him...
if you dont want the deceiver running around in TWA you have to find a place in the storyline for him to kill the watcher.

Wouldn't he be really easy to see, and unable to go underwater.... Maybe if you made the dust/smoke only appear when its moving and then very very little until it started to ignite... They could have lava rocks that would be like puss packets for ghols... i like
