: I think a middle ground should be found. As I mentioned
: in another thread, I hardly see why a Heron Guard (who
: is already ageless) would sacrifice anything to be
: immortal. Maybe a mercenary? Or some other elite (and
: now defunct) caste. I can't imagine a member of the
: army would be given leave to wield a glaive and wear
: no armour. Mayhap he's some kind of well known rogue?

I don't see how that's a "middle ground" between anything. I was suggesting that he not be a Heron Guard, but some other type of Bruig warrior. You're suggesting the same thing more or less. I actaully really like the idea of a whole section of Guard with glaives, not Heron Guard but a more traditional, Chinese-style Imperial Guard.

: Mazzarin *was* an Avatara at some point, right? Did he
: perish at The Watcher's hand at some point during The
: Wolf Age? Or was he killed much earlier? I ask because
: it would be interesting to play as him (as an
: Avatara), see him perish at The Watcher's hands, and
: then turn against you as a Shade. Would make for a
: cool piece of storyline, as he'd have an intricate
: knowledge of Connacht's plans.

He died in the Wind Age, and he was killed by the watcher. The relevant quotes go (from memory at least): "Of all the Avatara of the Four Ages, Mazzarin was by far the most powerful, and his death during the Wind Age one of the most salient victories of the Dark." and of course, "The seventh wave of Thrall stumbled and climbed over the slippery, piled dead, and Mazzarin saw The Watcher with them and at last knew the number of his days."

: That said, this won't work if it happened well before
: Connacht's time.

I have it placed that way in the subconcious timeline in my head, but I can't think of any real reason why. Oh yes! Because if Mazzarin was so kick-ass, then the Leveller would have used him instead of Connacht if he was alive at the right time.
