In Response To: Re: *is in total agreement.* (Phil)
: Lincoln was -not- a Radical Republican. Lincoln was a
: moderate.
: Lincoln was a social moderate, yes. But I believe Lincoln
: was also a radical in that he was willing to test the
: mettle of the Union, and gamble the future of the
: nation, in support of principles the Union believed
: were essential to the nations survival.
*shrugs* I disagree, but we might just be disagreeing on if the word is the right one.
: There's nothing wrong with being a radical, as such, if
: your motives are just. Lincoln has been judged by
: history, and history has found him justified. History
: will one day judge Bush as well, but I have my doubts
: that he will fare as favorably.
Did I somehow suggest that being a radical was a bad thing? Certainly wasn't my intention.
How would you judge his actions as favorable at all, without making assumptions that may be dubious (Like Archer, no insult to him intended, may be doing) about the consquences?
He's making the UN look weak, making the US look even more like an interfering bully (Which may be unreasonable, but something being unreasonable alone won't stop everyone from thinking it.), bloating the national debt, etc...
