Or just part of our nature to seek pleasure, rather than a drive to get drugged up.

I don't know. It honestly seems like all creatures (or at least higher mammals) have the desire to chemically anesthetize themselves from time to time. I'm not saying it's advisable or that everyone will give in to vice, but it does seem pretty universal. I'm not just strictly talking about drugs either. Alcohol, tobacco, caffeine, sleeping pills, and certain pain pills are all available over the counter in America. Big sellers all, but none of them directly give any pleasure. What they do is dull the edges just enough to help some people deal with stress. It may not be healthy, but it's quick and cheaper than therapy.
