Of all Iraqs ethnic groups, they are currently the most well armed (since we've been disarming nearly everyone else). Historically, they've been screwed, and if Turkey doesn't try anything funny they will have the guns (we gave them) to release all their frustration.

I think you're overestimating our level of cooperation with the Kurds. It would probably be best to label the Kurds as the most heavily armed Iraqi faction at the moment, because it wouldn't be correct to describe the Kurds as well armed. Moreover, there are several political factions within the Kurds as well. The PUK may be the dominant force, but they don't speak for all Iraqi Kurds.

While the Kurds may have some munitions and general autonomy in Northern Iraq they are, by far, a minority; outnumbered by the more affluent Sunni population and greatly outnumbered by the Iranian backed Shiite majority. The Kurd's chances are further hindered by high tensions with Turkey, which has vowed to intervene if the PUK takes full control of Iraqi Kurdistan. In addition to this, the U.S. made a deal with Turkey that exchanges Turkish fly-over rights for keeping the Kurds on a leash.
