Nice one Phil, you beat me to writing my sentiments. ;)
: This is true, Phil; however, you neglected to mention
: another significant factor on the U.N.'s decision, the
: major countries of Europe. Unfortunately for the
: world, European politics can often take a form of
: being somewhat anti-U.S. -- which is understandable,
: since, after having been what they considered the
: center of the civilized world for about a millenium
: and a half, it does seem natural to be slightly
: resentful towards a country that in little more than
: two centuries has not only usurped that position, but
: made them look rather laughable in comparison (in
: terms of economy, military, etc. I'm not going to
: start a discussion on more subjective matters). Thus,
: many of the major European countries, especially
: France, like to take an opposing view to the U.S., and
: whether they actually care about international laws
: and regulations or not becomes rather secondary. And,
: though they may not be quite as influential as the
: U.S., their word still carries a lot of weight in the
: U.N. I'm not disagreeing with you here, just adding a
: point that deserves some consideration as well.
That...is so...ignorant.
Sure Europe may regard the US as arrogant (not because it's a "new" power either, but because it is), and not only France.
But to suggest that dislike of a "new" power causes Europe to oppose blindly the US on such matters is immensely ill-informed.
By the way, the UK is a part of Europe, and we went to war too (which we shouldn't have).
Now, Phil. Firstly: how to get rid of?
Together with: who'd undertake the repsonsibility for every dictator, I'll put forward my own solutions.
There NEEDS to be an International Police Force. Not just like Interpol, but with Special Forces who could capture/kill tyrants for trial (if dead...meh).
Being part of the Un would help, esp. for international legitimacy, but if it couldn't be, then sobeit.
Cases to be addressed would be put before a council, and countries not in the IPF (International Police Force) would be invited to attend.
Vetoes would be non-existant, for obvious reasosn (I vote to let my dictator stay in power, and veto the move to remove my dictator).
If it's proven before this council that the dictators/whatevers are breaking the law (because the law applies to all, no matter how powerful or far away) then in go the boys to assasinate/capture/whatever.
"Wait! That's too simple! The country would fall into turmoil!"
True. Obviously, it'd be far more complicated than "bang, yay." Oppostiion groups would be aided, etc, it'd bascially be a bit like a silent war, trying to get government only, avoiding civilians, and with heaps of propaganda (the good type like, "Yo, Il Kim Whatever can't actually control the weather, and he's screwed you all over"). Still simplefited, but for obvious reasons that I can't spend forever going through every case that ever come up then typing it here.
So, an international polcie force with army capabilities. And that wouldn't care who you were, if you broke the law, that's it.
Who would do this? I don't know. Rulers are too selfish. As long as they're comfy, who cares how many millions aren't?
Hoepfully, someone will have the balls to stand up for the oppresed and do this, even if it's on their own.
Oh:
"I can't fault countries for wanting to use the Security Council to further their own agendas. Certainly America has done so on numerous occasions."
I can. Right and wrong doesn't change from man to man or place to place.
