: Not really. Sadists -enjoy- inflicting pain. I would say
: that can be -generally- considered a bad thing.

: Well, you're working under the assumption that pain is
: always a bad thing. Clearly this is not the case.
: While most people would consider pain to be a bad
: thing for themselves, there is a section of the
: population who would disagree (the aforementioned
: masochists). In addition, a little pain keeps me from
: badly burning my hand when I touch a hot stove. This
: pain, though it may hurt, is not, strictly speaking, a
: bad thing. Pain is an ambiguous concept and may not be
: seen by all people as you see it.

I believe you misread what I said. It can -generally- be considered a bad thing. Generally, it is a bad thing to inflict harm upon another person. That is what I meant. It is not an absolute, nessacerilly.

: That's the thing that bothers me about people who like
: being very open-minded on this...Some things, by being
: what they -are-, may be bad, period.

: I agree that there are some things that can be defined
: simply as either good or bad. However, I choose to see
: all things as multi-dimensionally as I am able to, and
: to see as few things as possible as either black or
: white. For example, murder is bad. I cannot think of a
: definition in which this is not true. Killing, a
: related idea, on the other hand is an ambiguous
: concept that can be viewed in a number of ways.
: Hopefully this open-minded view isn't so reasonable as
: to be beyond understanding.

: -Phil.

Define "Murder" as opposed to "killing"...

It isn't. I do think that you and I come from very different personal prespectives (which is not meant as a bad thing, relatively or absolutely, but may make it hard for us to understand each other as clearly as we might wish to.)

Thanks for expressing your thoughts. Even when I don't understand or agree with someone, hearing what they have to say is of interest to me.
