Tehre are various deities. Nyx, Wyrd, and the Dark Gods are some.
Nyx has just finished creating the Trow out of earth when Wyrd creates the mrotal plane by waking from a Dream, causing all he sees to be turned into the world he Dreamt. Unfortuantely this replaces the world Nyx made for the Trow. So she is understandably angry, and they fight - Tharsis the volcanoe is a wound Nyx gave to Wyrd. But Nyx calls on the Dark Gods to help, and they shatter Wyrd, his remains scattered over the world supposedly as Runestones (where, supposedly, the Dream magics can be unlocked).
So the Trow are on earth. Every 1,000 years or so, a new race seemingly appears from nowhere, but the Trow defeat them all - neither Oghre, Callieach, nor any other can defeat the Trow.
Man and the Lesser Races eventually appear. Whether it is due to their violence, or linked to the 1,000 year "Trow" cycle, or is something entirely different, every 1,000 years the Leveller takes a body and destroys the world. And every 1,000 years it is rebuilt - but each time he returns he is more powerful...
