I actually have a similar but more Myth-related topic to bring up (not to cancel this thread or anything, just to start another tangent). As I mentioned a while back, I'm running a GURPS Myth RPG right now. Last night, the party finally reached the end of "Chapter 1" (so to speak), and got their first big glipse at a choice of destinies they can take. One of our characters is a Dwarf in a magically enchanted mech suit who thinks he is a satyr (which, of course, do not exist in Myth - but his mech suit kinda looks like a big one, especially with the illusion spells cast on it). The player really wanted to play a satyr so I thought up an excuse why he can.
He's insane.
But, beyond that, he's insane because the Fetch have been speaking into his dreams through the alien magics that his mech suit is powered by. See... ok I'm doing too much narrative. Point it, there was a big confrontation as the Devoid. The Fetch, with the aid of the Dwarven Smiths (formerly of Muirthemne), are trying to open a portal down the Great Devoid to unleash the Dark Gods (long story... ask someone else, or read Principia Mythica). The Fetch confront Pan (our crazy dwarf character) and basically explain to him that they are not evil, they just want to destroy this world, which is what's REALLY evil. See, their gods, the Old/Dark/Spider/whatever Gods, USED to rule this world, until Wyrd came and kicked them out and built his own world in it's place, ruining everything they knew and loved.
All the cycles of Dark in the world since have been their attempts at revenge, and now they're coming back into power to take back their world and wipe out all that Wyrd has made. However, they're willing to spare anyone who helps them get back into this world, and they extend this offer to our party. Pan's first reaction (out of character) was basically "You're trying to trick me into joining the Dark Side, aren't you!" I presented all sorts of nice arguments on behalf of the Fetch, Dark Gods, etc, all basically coming down to "We were here first and we're just righting an injustice against us." Pan never got to accept or decline their offer cause a large hammer fell out of the sky (long story... and very big hammer) and smashed the Fetch... but the offer still stands, and he is contemplating accepting it. Time is running out, because an interdimensional crack has been opened from the Other Realm to the world of Myth, being pryed open from the other side, and presumably something apocalyptic will be coming out of it sooner or later.
So, what do you think? Are the Fetch evil, dark creatures of terror wreaking havoc on a decent world that did nothing worse than banish them all and destroy their civilization - but which none of the inhabitants currently there actually, personally did themselves? Or are they justified in their horrific acts, and all the inhabitants of the world of Myth unwitting consentors to an attempted and nearly successfull genocide against the "Dark" Gods' kind?
(I'm sure you can find at least one parallel of this situation to the real world, probably more).
Discuss amongst yourselves. I expect a minimum 5-page paper from each of you in my in-box in two weeks. Enjoy the rest of the semester.
