One other thought. If there's a W'rkncacnter at the bottom of the Great Devoid, maybe Alric's purpose in tossing the head in was the same as in Pathways Into Darkness. All the commotion of the Great War was starting to make the W'rkncacnter restless; the Jjaro warned Alric and he rigged the head to self-destruct once it was thrown in. Once it was destroyed, the immense magical energies Balor had wielded were released from it in a titanic explosion powerful enough to stun the W'rkncacnter and put it back to sleep.
