In Response To: Bahl'al, The Watcher, Unlife, etc (Superfoborg)

: First of all, Hi Loki, welcome to the forum,

Hello to you as well; grand meeting you.

: ...and thanks
: for the new ideas generating such increased discussion
: here. But please don't start off a thread by insulting
: me.

As a rule, I never insult, I never praise, I only state fact. (People sometimes thank me for praising their work. I scold them, telling them that I am only stating fact.) I expect the same treatment on my person.

No insult was intended.

I will tend to point out the failings of others on a more active basis than probably anyone any of you know, and this is a trait that I expect redirected on me (still playing by the golden rule). It may be some sort of disease of the brain, but I can't comprehend how pointing out weakness can be construed as an attack, and how someone would rather not hear about it.

: Now, comments on the various points in these recent
: threads...

: Somewhere in the Myth II manual or in some promotional
: material for the game, it states that Soulblighter
: "learned Balor's greatest secret - the
: reanimation of the dead" or some such. I'll let
: someone else finds a source to quote for me. Therefore
: it obviously wasn't JUST Bahl'al who could ressurect
: the dead, then, if it was Balor's "greatest
: secret" and Soulblighter learned it too.

Let me stop you right there, chief-

Sad to say, you're doing it again, jumping to conclusions.

While I do recall "Balor's greatest secret" from some text or another, I don't recall the exact phrasing used, nor do I see an exact quote. Therefore, any argument based on that in this post is simply not acceptable. You must maintain your chain of evidence.

Besides, Balor's greatest secret was likely how he did what he did with the Myrkridia, since he hated them so much, since they were in M2 and not TFL (imprisoned in the Tain in the Wind Age). As his most trusted lieutenant, Soulblighter would be likely learn of this from Balor at some time or another.

: Admittedly the story has undergone a lot of change
: through the development of the various games, and I
: believe initially that the Dream of Unlife was meant
: to be the spell which created undead, but it now seems
: to be something different, or at least to have been
: taught to others besides Bahl'al.

Again, Bahl'al sought it on his own, and had it long before Connacht was even in action, back in the Wind Age at the very least, possibly even further back than that.

: As for the association of Tyr, The Watcher and The
: Deceiver did not have it out for the city in the Wind
: Age as Loki assumes. It specifically states that that
: battle was 12 years before TFL, I believe in the
: narration for Seven Gates.

That is correct.

The Siege of Tyr by the Watcher is said to have happened twelve years prior to 7 December in whatever years TFL took place in.

While it is hearsay, "One of the veterans said that these two had it out after the battle for Tyr, twelve years ago, and that the Watcher barely survived," it would be as acceptable as any other lore given.

But, Mazzarin was still killed in the Wind Age by the Watcher and seven waves of thrall, meaning that Bahl'al is extremely ancient, assuming of course that the phrase 'Children of Bahl'al' is correct, and as it came from Bungie's own website, I'd assume it is.

: It is possible that Bahl'al
: (whether or not he is the Watcher) could have marched
: his Thrall on the city another time, true; but it
: seems the logical assumption is that the assault on
: Tyr spoken of in the TFL flavor texts is the same
: battle for Tyr spoken of elsewhere in TFL.

Assumption, yes, automatic conclusion, yes. Logical, no.

Two sieges of Tyr are mentioned, and that's all- nothing more, and nothing less, even in the journal narration.

Logic as a science is more of a process of deduction, presentation of fact, and argument, just like we're doing here. The layman will often confuse the nebulous subject of philosophy with logic. Philosophy searches for truth, while logic is a process and series of rules to deduce facts from pre-existing facts, more or less.

On an internet forum, one can confuse the two all one wishes, and the worst one will end up doing is corrupting a storyline for a commercially produced game.

It's dangerous, however, to do the same in the real world.

Now, like I said in the beginning, there is no actual thing in evidence to prove that Bahl'al is the Watcher, and there is a good hill (not quite a mountain) of evidence to indicate the antithesis.

If we can agree to this, I'm sure we can then open the floor to discussion about what we should be done about it, as there are major errors in not one but several things being profited from at this minute.
