I quite like the "Secret Heron" idea. It sounds like just the sort of thing Alric would do. And the Journeymen are probably just as eager to keep it hushed up: the Avengers would have been disobeying the Masters of the order, and would probably have been nothing less than heretics in the eyes of most Journeymen. In times of war, especially, it would have been important that the Journeymen appeared to present a united front, which means that it would have suited the Masters to deny the existence of the Avengers, and it would have suited Alric to use this supposed nonexistence for his own purposes.
