Actually, I would argue that here the facts and thoughts are more like first cousins. But, after the death of Henry, the thoughts rallied behind Empress Matilda and the Duke of Anjou, while the facts remained loyal to King Stephen's banner. 11 years later, Eustace is dead, William wants nothing to do with this, and Henry II has negotiated to become heir to the throne. Matilda gains nothing, though her progeny gain the throne, and Stephen is not looked kindly upon by historians. Later, the conflict between the facts and thoughts almost came to the destruction of the facts during the War of the Roses, but a political marriage finally ended the feud. This only proves that I have way too much time on my hands.
