Truth be told, no text in the game says explicitly that the Leveller *always* possesses a great hero. All it says is that "many of these heroes were doomed to return," and that two such were Connacht and Tireces. It may be that the Leveller simply possesses the single most powerful being on the planet at the time; this is usually the great hero, but it need not be. So if Alric gained a bunch of weight and an drug problem, and his magical skills went downhill--or if Soulblighter killed him--the Leveller might incarnate in Soulblighter as the baddest bastich around.
