Or maybe we're not giving MJ enough credit. Maybe the tomb itself is a reflection of the state of Mazzarin's mind; the statement "I am no longer a slave to the forces of light and darkness" might be considered ironic. Clearly Mazzarin is very much still a part of the great cycle as the conflict between loyal Stygians, lyche, astral travellers and the forces of light rages throughout his crumbling haunt. Even at the climax of the cutscene Mazzarin changes the fate of the Cath Bruig empire with his magic. Again, this may be MJs' explanation for Mazzarin in myth tfl; he's just totally deluded.
