Oh, I think it's perfectly on-topic. I love mythology. I've actually got a sort of Grand Unified Theory of Mythology in the works... I've found a ton of cross-connections between different mythologies scattered all over the world, which I began by tracing sunken-homeland and flood mythologies, and connecting them with various little-known recent archaological and geneological tidbits, to create a set of migration paths for most of the world's mythologies, which could possibly, with a lot of work, be traced back to recreate a sort of proto-mythology resembling that which most of the ancient world's mythologies likely descend from (with a lot of distortion and invention thrown in in the meantime, of course).
