I think the lyches were searching for Mazzarin as opposed to working with him; note they fight with the stygian knights and wisps (I think). Maybe Mumbo Jumbo were making the point that the Watcher knew where Mazzarin was, and since Mazzarin demanded the Watcher was informed of who brought him down; maybe the Watcher came back and enslaved Mazzarin in revenge. Then again, maybe you're right and The Watcher had already corrupted Mazzarin, so that Mazzarin's actions and words ensured the Watcher would be enslaved as opposed to eliminated?
