The actual mention of the Smiths in Myth II is from the spider flavor. We have three relevant text passages: one which says the Smiths built the Tain, one which says the Smiths served the spider-cult, and one which says the spider-cult was centered in the catacombs. Dwarves and Humans are the only races known to have lived in the Cath Bruig empire; we thought Dwarves are more likely to be the Smiths because of their in-game reputation as great inventors and artisans. But you're right, the Smiths could be a group of gifted humans, or even a different race entirely that we don't know about.
There was additional evidence for their being Dwarves that I don't quite remember; something about the similarity in the workmanship of the artifacts found inside the Tain, like the lightning towers, and other artifacts in the overworld which are also known or suspected to be of Dwarven architecture, like the World Knots. Forrest, I think you were one of the ones who brought this to our attention. Care to comment?
