My only complaint is that, regardless of the source, a great piece of literature should present its moral conflict in such a two-dimensional way (I hated Billy Budd on the same logic). Just because it's inspired by nordic mythology doesn't mean that a character can't be ethically fleshed out. Arguing about its roots in mythology or that there was no established fantasy genre at the time (the Mabinogian Tetralogy doesn't count, I guess) doesn't justify an uninspired view of good versus evil.
