: Lame-oh way to waste future wight material if you ask me.
Not given the purpose of the attack. Being considerably faster than wights, ghasts are much better at chasing down fear-maddened peasants; without convenient pools of deep water wights can't pull any ambushes. And Soulblighter was pressed for time, I suppose, since he wanted to get as much done as possible before rumors of his return reached Alric; it wasn't worth it to wait however many weeks it takes for a ghast to become a full-blown wight.
: Have we had any theories on who Culwyeh was/is?
Well, since his name is now "forgotten by all save the most devout pupils of Necromancy," I'd assume he's not a major bad guy from this last cycle. Maybe he's a minor disciple of Bahl'al, now dead; maybe he's a Fallen Lord from many cycles ago. I see him as sort of a sorcerous Mafia don; "Sigmund's distrust...saddens me...is this how a boy should treat his godfather? I think it's time...I sent him...a friendly *message*." (while wheezing Brando-style)
