I know 'tis a weak connection, but an interesting one. Concerning your original post: I remember Saruman mentioning to Gandalf "...the crowns of seven kings...", Gondor had seven gates, there were 14 companions on the journey to Erebor in "The Hobbit" (multiply 7 by 2) e.t.c.
I will search for more seven connections in LotR and "The Silmarillion".
