Actually, I think he was postulating about why Soulblighter found the Tain in the first place, not how he got the shard (which that above theory explained well). But then that is easily explained itself: powerfull objects call to the wicked and discontent, like the shard did to the Deceiver. "So it was that Soulblighter rediscovered the Tain".

We know exactly who they were: the Smiths of Muirthemne, Dwarves who worshipped the giant spiders that lived deep in the hills around their homelands. Now who or what, exactly, the Spider-gods are, and their weird nether-world through that shrine in the Tain, is another matter entirely.
