Alric is probably despairing just as much as the men who are marching to their certain destruction, Seraph. The thing is, that he has to give his men hope. If his men have no hope, they have nothing to fight for, and they have no will. They would be crushed by Balor in no time flat without the encouragement of their leader, in such a scenario.
