In Response To: Re: mantle of the leveller (Doom)

: That goes against every theory on the leveller previously
: made, you know. It just doesn't make sense. "The
: mantle of the leveller" is EXTREMELY likely to be
: a metaphorical expression, not referring to any
: object, but the possession of the man by the spirit.
: It's sort of like the expression "Coming into the
: purple" for a person who's becoming king/queen,
: or "a cloak of darkness covering the land".
: The expressions aren't literal, and they don't refer
: to any object. Certain things (colors, clothing, etc)
: have connotations to other things: If you wear a
: cloak, with the hood drawn up, it's hard to tell who
: you are, lack of knowledge is associated with
: darkness, and thus the expressions "cloak of
: darkness". If you were to continue this thought:
: Mantle is being equated with the position or status
: of being leveller, and to don (put on) the
: "mantle of the leveller" is to become the
: leveller. A mantle/cloak has never , never been
: thought of as associated with artifacts of any kind,
: thus the writers of Myth, if they had any idea what
: soever what they were doing (which they certainly seem
: to, if I do say so myself), they would be using it
: simply as an expression such as I have heretofore
: referenced.

Quite. In the same way, to say that "The king was thrown off the throne" /usually/ means the king was removed from the job of being king.
